First FIT Pre-College Class Experience

"Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live."
— Gianni Versace

This past weekend I attended my first FIT Pre-College class. I'll admit, I was a bit nervous at first, but I came with two friends (Melanie and Marissa), and I knew they would show me the ropes. Melanie and Marissa had both been to the FIT pre-college classes before and they assured me, the first day would be tons of fun.

We all took different classes and this proved to be the right decision as I noticed that people who came with other friends weren't socializing as much. Of course I was nervous about meeting new people, whether I would have friends, and be able to find my way, but within the first fifteen minutes of class our professor immediately had us sit down and socialize. I met some incredible people and right away I knew I could talk to them. We all started making small talk about our lives, and where we were from, but what really connected us was our love of photography.

Our professor opened up our eyes to see the infinite amount of possibilities our camera presented us with. As long as we could control the settings, we could control the image we hoped to create and more importantly, the story we hoped to convey. We covered the basics of our cameras and faced our fears of the manual setting on our camera. Some of us hadn't had much experience on this setting, including me who wanted to know how to take a good picture on manual, but mostly shot on auto since I didn't know how to. Little did we know, we were to take our first adventure after lunch to 5-Points in Queens.

The traveling to 5-Points seemed like an adventure in itself, as most of us don't take the subway everyday. I have taken it numerous times before with my sister, but as a group it was a bit unnerving as there was a constant fear of becoming disconnected with the group.

Once the subway car emerged out of the tunnel and into the bright sunny sky, we witnessed the beauty that 5-Points really encompassed. 5-Points is a place artists are permitted to paint graffiti on with permission. But the graffiti isn't present in one spot only, as it envelopes this massive building, even covering the vast roof top.

I was so focused on our assignment I didn't get the greatest photos of 5-points and the graffiti is ever changing, so who knows...I might just come back to find it look completely different!

By the end of the day I had met some new friends, taken some awesome pictures and had an overall amazing experience. Oh and lunch was pretty good at the FIT cafeteria, although next time I think we're going to go somewhere else!

Here are some photos from the day and from 5-Points:
