Read Between the Stripes

"I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them confidence."

— Yves Saint Laurent

Stripes can be figure flattering, or not so figure flattering. The key to wearing this hit spring trend is knowing the basics of this classic pattern. I personally have always admired the class, style, and sleekness of this simple pattern, and now that stripes are a hit trend for this Spring/Summer I can find stripes practically everywhere this season!

Fashion Lessons:

  1. You have to be careful with horizontal stripes because if worn incorrectly this pattern can make anyone appear wider than usual and unless you love the look of excess bloating, be very careful...
  2. Vertical stripes are simple to wear and make anyone look taller
I know many of you must be thinking, "But horizontal stripes are everywhere on the racks..." Well actually 99% of you probably weren't thinking that, but it's true.

Everywhere I've been seeing thin horizontal striped shirts, skirts, dresses, etc., giving a sailor inspired feel to many fashion pieces. I own many striped shirts; I think I'm probably obsessed, but that's besides the point of this post. Designers have been breaking the #1 rule of stripes this season and people are liking it.

Wearing horizontal stripes has never been easier and this fashion faux pas has now turned into the biggest trend since crop tops.

Take a look for yourself:

Plus this week in my Fashion Photography class at FIT, we did a sailor inspired shoot featuring stripes

There are so many more outfits I could post, but I'll leave it at that...

For the love of all striped clothing,
Good Luck

  1. Does this mean traditional "Candy Stripers" are now considered "trendy?" Candy stripers are people who volunteer in hospitals. Handing out magazines and loaning out books are one of the many duties they can help with in a hospital setting (in case you didn't know-) They used to wear uniforms with stripes on them - I don't know if that's still the case, though. Love your article! Keep up the great work -

  2. I ADORE this blog... I try to be fashionable but I've noticed a lot of clothes cost too much and you make it so easy to be classy and not spend too much money at the same time. I can't stress enough how I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! Keep doing what you're doing! (P.S. you're gorgeous) xoxoxoxo
